Week One

*From Sky, one week late (we right these at the farm and cannot post them until we are in a town)

Here we are in the sweet little tucked away farm  Hacienda Luz Del Corazon. The farm itself is about 7km from the town of Aguas Claras (which is composed of a bank, school, internet cafe, market,&bar) and 4km from little bitty La Anita which I have not yet visited.

So the farm, we are on about 5 acres in the literally the middle of the jungle. Right at all of the fences the jungle is trying to reclaim the land again. It's really beautiful. The lucrative section of the  farm is currently growing coffee and cacao which is operated by 4 local ticos. Alfredo the neighbor who spends most of his time at his own farmt, is a very joyful man who despite the language barrier is very funny. Alex another worker is Alfredos son and is always wearing a cool billabong shirt and he calls me Bro so I like him. Macho is the third, they call him macho cause his skin is lighter than the rest so it's weird to call him macho but I have had the most conversation with him. I'm not sure if I said that none of them speak a drop of English  hahaha. Finally Edwin is the Tico in charge of the wwoofers(us)  and he drives us to town twice a week to get groceries and brings us essentials when we run out (gasoline or what have you). He is also cool.

The farm situation is a very interesting one. Deepa the woman who owns and finances the farm is currently not here as she is making money for the farm in the states. This apparently happens quite often. The twist is that the second head guy died in December so this is the first time deepa has left the farm to only the wwoofers. Jesse the only wwoofer who had met deepa just left this last weekend (but we got to celebrate his 22nd b-day). This has placed a very relaxed and self motivated vibe on the farm. It's a strange experience being one of 5 random American 20yr Olds that basically runs this costa rican farm while the owner is wherever she is. It's like we found the loophole to life hahaha but seriously we get to live in paradise, explore the freaking jungle (did i say that our backyard is a national volcano forest with rivers and hot springs and monkeys?) And we get to eat what we grow!! Which leads me to what we we do.
Feed the 6 dogs (lily,eve,gordo,wu,buddy,krishna)
Feed the 26 ducks(19 are babies)
Feed the rooster and his 3 hens
Water/weed the gardens(4)
*insert whatever permaculuture idea here* hahaha but ya basically once those are done we take matters into our own hands. Like making compostable toilets when we're feeling like doing a little work or making a swimming hole at the river when we're feeling like a little play time(an ok amount of the time). But what people do most is read and study spanish

Last thing I'll talk about this week is our fellow wwoofers.
Adam and Hannah are a wonderful couple from Washington state  who got the awesome idea to bike down the western coastline of the Americas!!! They started in California and have wwoofed and biked their way down to Costa Rica pretty amazing. We have found that they are some sort of interesting doppelganger to maddi and myself and many threads of our lives intertwined in funny ways. We will probably go to Nicaragua with them in a few months because our trip timelines work out.

Jake is a very cool dude from Arkansas who you would think is straight from California. He is very laid back and loves adventure time. My type of dude for sure. He has a tattoo of an native american woman on his side and when I asked him about it he said. " my family told me we were native American so I went to get a blood test and scheduled a tattoo but the test came back late so I got the tattoo first then I found out I wasn't native american a few days later" I thought this is a very funny testament to him.

Jesse who left this last weekend had been here since January and had lots of farming knowledge! He liked his beer and he was from North Carolina and he worked as a zip line instructor there. He was sad to leave the farm after putting so mich work into it but if I ever go to NC he's my man.
